Wake Up: I Am Still a Human – Tisha M.

Today we’re delighted to bring you a poem entitled “Wake Up/Treat Me Like a Human” by Tisha M. We love the style and passion of this piece. Enjoy!

Wake Up/Treat Me Like a Human

A small white flower

Soon trickled blood,

Purity and innocence,

Society claimed; washed away from her.

She held threads of secrets,

Whispers of happiness,

Cries of pain,

Flames of anger.

A woman, a carrier of knowledge

Of peace and forgiveness,

Of agony and ire,

Of birth and silence.

Her screams and thoughts,

Hear them become whispers,

Hear her voice turn

Hoarse from suppression.

Isolated from the world

At that time of the month,

Disgraced, like an animal,

Do you forget she too is human?

Do you hear her breaking the chains,

Fighting to live like a human?

Can you hear her screeches,

Her whispers drowned in pain?

“Menstruation should not be a taboo,” she shouts,

“Wake up from your delusion!

Wake up, wake up and hear

Hear my message through the wind.”

“Blood seeps through me,

Such is nature’s gift to me.

Why am I shunned, berated

And faced by another locked door?”

“So many restrictions,

Called dirty and impure,

Can’t enter the temple,

Or be in the same room as others.”

It’s not a taboo,

It’s a natural process,

If people can evolve,

Why can’t their brains?

The way to adulthood for women,

Should not be made a taboo.

Wake your brains, evolve your thoughts,

Wake up from your delusions,

“And treat me like a human!”
